The 51st Session of BNU Legal Practice Lecture Series - The lecture of "International Arbitration in Universities: A Detailed Explanation of the Century-old Arbitration Rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC)" was successfully held

On the afternoon of November 23, 2023, the Law School of Beijing Normal University had the pleasure of welcoming Ms. He Weirong, Deputy Director of Dispute Resolution for North Asia at the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and Vice President of the International Commercial Simulation Arbitration Association, for a special visit. During her visit, Ms. He delivered an insightful lecture titled "International Arbitration in Universities: An In-Depth Analysis of the ICC's Century-Old Arbitration Rules." The event was skillfully moderated by Associate Professor Pei Yang of the Law School.

As the Deputy Director of Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution for North Asia at the ICC, Ms. He Weirong oversees the expansion and collaboration of arbitration and mediation services across North Asia. She is also instrumental in advancing trade facilitation efforts, including managing government and public relations, and oversees the daily operations of the ICC's Shanghai Representative Office. Prior to her role at the ICC, Ms. He Weirong honed her expertise in international commercial arbitration through her tenure at various international organizations and law firms.

During the lecture, Associate Professor Pei Yang extended a warm welcome to the distinguished guest and provided a thorough introduction, elucidating the subject matter and significance of the lecture to the audience.



Subsequently, Ms. He Weirong mainly introduced the history and evolution of the International Chamber of Commerce Arbitration Institute, the International Chamber of Commerce Arbitration Rules and Mediation Rules, the International Chamber of Commerce Arbitration Procedure, and recommended international arbitration learning resources from four aspects. At the same time, based on practical experience, she elaborated on the latest development trends of international commercial arbitration in a clear and concise manner.





Throughout the lecture, the students engaged enthusiastically, fearlessly voicing their perspectives on critical issues such as "the underlying drivers behind the global acceptance of international arbitration as a dispute resolution mechanism," "the potential for arbitrators to assume the role of mediators in international commercial arbitration," and "the efficacy of party autonomy within the framework of electronic payment protocols (EPP)." Ms. He Weirong adeptly addressed these inquiries, providing responses and insights grounded in current regulations and legal precedents.



The lecture marked the 51st installment of the BNU Legal Practice Lecture Series, drawing an audience of over 90 students. It significantly expanded the students' understanding, igniting a keen interest in the practical aspects of international arbitration. By delving into the latest trends and challenges within the domain of international arbitration, the event offered participants a more profound insight into the subject matter. The students' enthusiastic response and active participation underscored the lecture's resounding success.
