The legal culture series "Legal Culture in Festivals and Seasons" presented by Li Dejia from our school, is set to air on CCTV's Social and Legal Channel within the "Legal Lecture Series" (Culture and History Edition) on June 21 and 22, 2023. This broadcast is timed to align with the summer solstice and the Dragon Boat Festival, a period that traditionally underscores the principle of "laws should align with the natural cycles of the four seasons." In ancient China, the observation of natural laws, including climatic and celestial patterns, gave rise to a rich tradition of solar terms and seasonal rhythms. Li Dejia will delve into the relationship between the solar terms and seasons, governed by the laws of climate change, and the traditional laws of ancient China. He will explore the cultural heritage and implications behind the celebration of the Dragon Boat Festival by our ancestors, as well as the traditional legal and cultural concepts it reflects. The lecture will particularly focus on the legal culture embedded in solar terms, with an emphasis on the cultural legacy of the Dragon Boat Festival, dissecting the cultural importance of the rule of law.

“Laws Should Align with the Natural Cycles of the Four Seasonswill be aired on CCTV-12 at 4:00 pm on June 21

The ancients linked the art of governance, encompassing legal proceedings, with the ebb and flow of the seasons—namely "spring, summer, autumn, winter"—and the cycle of "rewards and punishments." They suspended the acceptance of legal complaints during the peak of the agricultural season, administered rigorous court sessions in the summer, pardoned those wrongfully accused or guilty of minor offenses, and reviewed and carried out capital punishment in the autumn. This approach exemplifies a profound respect for natural order and its impact on societal affairs. It reflects an understanding that the rhythm of the law should harmonize with the cycles of nature. From this, we can glean the wisdom of aligning legal practices with the practical needs and moral imperatives of the community, as well as the importance of tempering justice with compassion and seasonal considerations.
