On the afternoon of May 26, 2023, Dr. Myra Blyth, who leads and serves as the principal investigator for the restorative justice program at Regent's College, University of Oxford, paid a visit to the Law School of Beijing Normal University. During her visit, she engaged in cordial discussions with representatives from the Law School and the International Exchange and Cooperation Office, focusing on the practical applications and collaborative opportunities within the realm of restorative justice. Accompanying Dr. Blyth was Ms. Nancy Che, Research Assistant for the Restorative Justice Program at Regent's College. The meeting was attended by Professor Chai Rong, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Law School of Beijing Normal University, Professor He Ting, Vice Dean of the Law School, Associate Professor Qin Xiaojing from the Law School, Liu Lengxin, Deputy Director of the International Exchange and Cooperation Department, and Wang Xiaochuan.
Professor Chai Rong, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Law School of Beijing Normal University, extended a warm welcome to Dr. Myra Blyth and provided an insightful overview of the Law School's history and evolution. She elaborated on the school's current status and its innovative educational approach, emphasizing the value of scholarly exchanges across different disciplines. Professor He Ting, Vice Dean of the Law School, introduced the application and practice of restorative justice concepts in Chinese criminal justice, including criminal reconciliation procedures, juvenile justice, and the introduction of restorative justice concepts and practices in corporate compliance reform. He also had a discussion with Dr. Myra Blyth on the core issues that restorative justice should respond to in cases of child abuse and juvenile delinquency.
Dr. Myra Blyth highlighted that pinpointing common challenges in judicial practice across nations would be a pivotal topic for discussion during the seminar. She noted that while various countries have adopted distinct judicial models tailored to their specific circumstances, fostering smoother dialogue among scholars from diverse countries could significantly benefit legal professionals from different cultural milieus. Such communication, she contended, would not only strengthen interconnections but also facilitate mutual learning and collaborative endeavors to devise optimal practical solutions and innovative models of global governance.
Liu Lengxin, Deputy Director of the International Exchange and Cooperation Department, apprised Dr. Myra Blyth of the recent international exchange activities in which the university's students have participated, and underscored the enduring partnership between University of Oxford and Beijing Normal University, expressing the hope to dispatch more exemplary students from Beijing Normal University to Oxford for advanced studies in the coming years. Dr. Myra Blyth conveyed her anticipation of welcoming more high-caliber students from Beijing Normal University to University of Oxford for their continued education, thereby enhancing the cultural exchange between Chinese and British students.
The two sides had preliminary exchanges and ideas on the timing and agenda of the China-UK restorative justice practice seminar to be held in 2024, and had in-depth discussions on academic and student development. Finally, Professor Chai Rong, on behalf of the Law School, presented souvenirs to Dr. Myra Blyth and Nancy Che, and the two sides took a group photo to commemorate the successful conclusion of the meeting.
