Since January 2024, the Second Branch of the Beijing Municipal People's Procuratorate has cooperated with many well-known universities in Beijing by opening a number of internship positions such as criminal prosecution and arrest, accusation and appeal, civil prosecution, and procuratorial supervision in order to further promote the co-construction and exchange between the procuratorate and the university. Beijing Normal University Law School selected and recommended six outstanding students from undergraduate, master and doctoral programs to participate in the internship. During the internship, our students took Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as their guide, fully implemented the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and thoroughly implemented Xi Jinping's Thought on the Rule of Law. Guided by their departmental mentors, the interns enthusiastically engaged in a spectrum of procuratorial and judicial administrative tasks, including comprehensive criminal arrest and prosecution procedures, as well as the application of big data in supervising civil cases. Their dedication and competence earned them commendations and acknowledgment from the host internship units.
The internship program, a collaborative effort between the procuratorate and the educational institution, encompasses a diverse range of business fields. Six students from the Beijing Normal University Law School were allocated to the First, Fifth, Sixth, and Eighth Procuratorate Divisions. Throughout their internship, the rotation among various departments enhanced each intern's comprehension of the distinct operations within the procuratorate. During their tenure at the internship unit, our students profoundly benefited. They not only immersed themselves in the tasks and challenges faced by prosecutors but also developed a more nuanced understanding of procuratorial work. Their skills were honed across multiple dimensions, and they amassed valuable practical experience. Ultimately, the six interns concluded their internship with exemplary performance and a demonstration of exceptional work capabilities.
Beijing Normal University Law School attaches great importance to and actively carries out internship exchanges and cooperation in law with the procuratorates in Beijing. Co-construction between the procuratorate and the school is also an important measure to promote the benign interaction between legal education and procuratorial practice. The internship and practice activities carried out in cooperation with the Second Branch of the Beijing Municipal People's Procuratorate have achieved good results, demonstrating Beijing Normal University Law School's high attention to legal practice education and the effective cultivation of students' professional knowledge. In the future, Beijing Normal University Law School will continue to be guided by Xi Jinping's thoughts on the rule of law, practice the school motto of "Pursue Moral Education, Promote the Rule of Law", adhere to the combination of theory and practice, deepen exchanges and cooperation with judicial organs, continue to supply high-quality legal talents, and contribute to China's rule of law cause.
Internship Reflections
Liu Shuo, a LL.M. student in Criminal Law of Class of 2023
T The three-month internship at the Second Branch of the Beijing Municipal Procuratorate was an enriching and productive experience. Throughout my tenure, I engaged in rigorous study and research, focusing on the screening of clues and the construction and refinement of the big data legal supervision model. I contributed to the completion of several case review reports and successfully executed the big data screening for criminal and civil cross-case files. This internship not only provided me with firsthand insight into the precision and sense of duty inherent in procuratorial work but also highlighted the increasingly sophisticated demands placed on legal professionals in light of technological advancements and the evolving times. This realization has further motivated me to exert greater effort and diligence in my future academic pursuits and professional life, as I aspire to dedicate my youth to the development of the rule of law in China.
Li Weilan, a JM student of Class of 2022
I was privileged to join the criminal arrest and prosecution division of the procuratorate as part of the collaborative project between the procuratorate and the educational institution. Throughout my internship, I supported the processing of a variety of criminal cases, including the review of arrests, prosecution decisions, and the approval of detention extensions. In confronting significant, challenging, and intricate cases, I actively aided prosecutors in organizing and examining evidence, endeavoring to ensure the procedural and substantive fairness and justice of the law, and advocating for the rectification of illegal actions in criminal investigations and judicial proceedings. During this internship, I continually strengthened my resolve and refined my political stance, while also gaining a deeper understanding of the profound meaning behind "prosecution in the service of the people" through my work. I aspire to continue contributing to the rule of law in my homeland in the future, remaining steadfast in my loyalty to China, its people, the Constitution, and the law.
