On March 4th, the 46th lecture of the BNU Zhuhai Legal Lecture Series, titled "Overview of German Social Security Law," was successfully held at Room C404, Lijiao Building, Beijing Normal University at Zhuhai. This lecture was given by Professor Barbara Darimont from Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences in Germany and hosted by Mr. Niu Zihan from the Center on the Rule of Law and Development at Beijing Normal University. Professor Yuan Zhijie, Vice Dean of the Law School and Director of the Rule of Law Development Research Center at the Beijing Normal University at Zhuhai, and Dr. Ye Zaixing from Zhuhai Huafa Group served as panelists. The session was attended and closely studied by a group of engaged master’s and PhD students from Beijing Normal University at Zhuhai.
At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Barbara Darimont reviewed the historical background of German social security law, and then focused on the core content of German social security law, presenting us with the overall picture of the German social security system, including important issues such as health insurance, pension insurance, unemployment insurance, work-related injury insurance, and long-term care insurance. Professor Barbara Darimont comprehensively interprets the legal system of German social security law with insightful discourse and vivid graphic presentations.
Kicking off the lecture, Professor Barbara Darimont took a retrospective look at the historical underpinnings of German social security law. She then delved into the heart of German social security law, painting a comprehensive picture of the German social security system for the audience. This included in-depth discussions on pivotal topics such as health insurance, pension insurance, unemployment insurance, occupational injury insurance, and long-term care insurance. With her perceptive analysis and engaging visual aids, Professor Darimont offered a thorough interpretation of the legal framework that governs German social security law.
In the conversation session, Mr. Niu Zihan first expressed gratitude to Professor Barbara Darimont for her wonderful speech. Later, Professor Yuan Zhijie and Professor Ye Zaixing had further in-depth exchanges with Professor Barbara Darimont on the medical security of foreigners in Germany, the social security of housewives, and the relief of accidents in the League building.
During the interactive and communicative segment, students engaged in lively discussions with Professor Barbara Darimont, touching upon topics like the postponement of retirement age and the delicate balance between government taxation and employment challenges for the youth. Professor Darimont exhibited patience and thoroughness as she addressed each query with careful consideration.
This scholarly banquet not only afforded our faculty and students a valuable chance to delve into the forefront of international legal theories but also established a pivotal forum for bolstering legal exchanges and collaboration between our institutions. As the lecture drew to a close, it was met with resounding and enthusiastic applause from the students, marking a successful culmination of the event.
