On December 5th, the 75th lecture of the BNU Zhuhai Legal Lecture Series, titled “Refining China’s Foreign-related Arbitration System to Establish Itself as a Premier Destination for International Commercial Arbitration,” was successfully held in Classroom C104 of the Leyu Building at BNU Zhuhai. The lecture was delivered by Professor Shen Sibao, Director of the Institute of International Business Law at the University of International Business and Economics and an expert member of the International Commercial Expert Committee of the Supreme People’s Court. Professor Yuan Zhijie, Vice Dean of the BNU Law School and Director of the Center on the Rule of Law and Development at BNU Zhuhai, served as the panelist, while Professor Cui Wenxing from the Law School acted as the host. A large number of students from BNU Zhuhai attended the event.

To begin, Professor Cui Wenxing formally introduced the speaker, Professor Shen Sibao, highlighting his distinguished academic standing and outstanding scholarly achievements, and extended a warm welcome for his presence.

To commence the lecture, Professor Shen Sibao drew upon insights from his legal teaching practice, emphasizing that the essence of law lies in its application. He advocated for the integration of legal and commercial studies, highlighting the necessity of cultivating foreign-related legal talents equipped with a multidisciplinary background in "law, economics, and foreign languages."

Professor Shen then provided an in-depth interpretation of the newly revised Arbitration Law of the People's Republic of China, which took effect in September 2025. He affirmed the valuable achievements of China's arbitration practice over the past thirty years, noting that the revision reflects a legislative spirit dedicated to serving the nation's market-oriented, law-based, and international business environment, as well as the great cause of national rejuvenation, thereby achieving alignment with international arbitration standards. His presentation focused on three core issues: the internationalization of Chinese arbitration and the incorporation of Chinese elements within international arbitration; the introduction of the "arbitration venue" concept and the ad hoc arbitration system in the new law; and the necessity for foreign-related arbitration to comply with the general provisions of the Arbitration Law.

During the session, Sun Huijun, a partner at Yingke Law Firm, shared practical insights regarding the application of foreign-related elements based on cases he had handled. In the subsequent discussion, Professor Yuan Zhijie pointed out the deficiencies in foreign language proficiency among law students and the resulting scarcity of foreign-related legal talent, encouraging students to enhance their linguistic capabilities and to recognize the vast potential, the "blue ocean", of the arbitration sector.

Finally, Professor Shen Sibao engaged in a Q&A session with the students, urging them to solidify their professional foundations, improve their foreign language skills, and seize employment opportunities in the field of arbitration. The lecture concluded successfully amidst warm applause from the attending faculty and students.
