Teachers and students made concerted efforts to transport all luggage.
Communication, confirmation and transportation happened again and again.
Teachers of Law School were praised as “super careful” and set good examples.
This added to the warmth of the special graduation season and taught the “last lesson” for graduates before leaving the school.
Affected by COVID-19, the majority of graduates of 2020 failed to return to their Alma Mater and the luggage packing issues for students presented a challenge for graduation work. The Law School attached great importance to the work in light of actual situation of students from the school based on relevant requirements of specific work plan of the school and made detailed arrangement on the luggage packing of graduates.
Preliminary work
At the beginning of July, the School clarified relevant principles of “fully respecting the will of students”, “personalized strategy”, “strict protection of students’ privacy”, “cooperation of teachers in packing work” and fully queried and confirmed the will of students, sorted out information of packing of students and worked out standing books for packing situation of graduates and list of students entrusting others to pack.
On July 7, the School mobilized the luggage packing work for graduates. The School leaders, full-time teachers, administrative teachers, counselors responded to the call. At last, 35 teachers and student volunteers took part in the packing work group. The packing work kicked off.
On July 8, to ensure the smooth progress of packing work, the Student Affairs Office convened the packing work preparatory meeting to arrange the specific matters for luggage mailing of graduates, divided groups, had several one-to-one communications and established several-to-one packing squads. In accordance with the demand of each graduate, it formulated items packing and mailing plan to manage “personalized strategy”. Faculties from the Student Affairs Office communicated with the supervisor of dorms to issue dorm entry materials, prepare graduation souvenirs, tapes, scissors, mark pens, anti-pandemic materials and make necessary preparations for packing.
The day of departure
On July 9, LIANG Yingxiu, secretary of Party committee of the Law School organized and convened departure mobilization meeting. GUO Yating, deputy secretary of Party committee made pre-packing training and explanation on specific work arrangement. Later on, teachers set out from the rear main building and headed towards the student dormitory for packing.
It was drizzling from the morning of the day. Despite the bad weather, teachers were enthusiastic in packing up. Teachers who had outstanding performance in the classes shuttled among dormitories and carefully asked about the disposal of items from students; counselors prepared materials and made arrangement and inventory and never missed one item; the support teachers actively cooperated and moved one after another luggage from dormitories to delivery points.
Every dormitory room being sorted out underwent the same routine of video calls, confirmation by photographing.
“Do you need the item?”
“Yes, is my favorite book collected?”
“Yes, in that box.”
“That’s great, thank you, teacher.”
On the high bedstead, Mr. LIANG was putting away quilts and carefully asked the student who was going to continue study through WeChat video call. “You still need the quilt and the thermos bottle under your bed, right?
“Yes, teacher.”
In front of the luggage cabinet, the teacher stepped on one stool and patted the books.
“Teacher, I have new several poem collections. Could you help me take them?”
Lens went through books on the shelve with the hand of the teacher.
“Those books, right?”
“Right, thank you so much.”
Some students had a lot of stuffs and might forget about some. The teacher carefully asked and removed the commemorative postcard on the wall.
“I will just collect this for you.”
It was a touching moment.
Teachers took boxes as desks and held receipt to check information again with students to ensure the correct mailing information.
For students who needed the delivery of luggage, one-to-one teachers accompanied them to the delivery point and escorted the last trip before the delivery of luggage. For students who needed the deposit of luggage, teachers kept close watch on their luggage until the last point and took photos of specific site to students and double checked before going back to offices.
At the end of packing, some students had a lot of luggage. Teachers responsible fore luggage delivery and teachers who kept an eye on luggage before shipping were still hanging in there. Even though it’s already lunch time, some teachers were still waiting in the dormitories and some teachers were still waiting in the rain at delivery points. They were performing their duties for their covered students until the last moment. Stories like this were a lot and the teacher-student friendship never ended.
In this packing work, teachers from the Law School were highly motivated and acted in an efficient way, which fully reflected that when teachers and students made concerted efforts, challenges can always be overcome. The packing work was implemented horizontally and was subject to “personalized strategy”. On July 9, packing for 27 students was completed.
The pandemic caused spacing between people but never put an end to the connection time between teachers and students; besides the luggage delivered, the care and expectation from teachers went along.
Comments of BNULAWER
After this packing work, students were touching and shedding tears. They had a lot to say to their teachers.
Teachers, locksmiths, dorm keepers were patient with us and the packing was smooth. We asked about delivery type beforehand and the shipping fees were cheap. We really appreciate it.
-YU Yuan, graduate from the Law School
Teachers and dorm keepers were careful and would ask about the disposal of all items. They were careful about packing. As my luggage was not too much, the packing work was quickly done and all my luggage was delivered. I appreciate the work done by our School.
-ZHAO Qiulin, graduate from the Law School
It can be difficult to pack luggage for graduates remotely. It requires the coordination of students, the School, logistics, delivery and involves communication of a dozen of or dozens of people. In many communications, our demands were clarified and the responsibilities of each party were clear. Finally, the task that might be messy and prone to mistakes was perfectly completed.
It might never occur to teachers that they would be arranged to do such “tasks” one day. It never occurred to me that my university life would end in this way. These illogical and magical things finally became part of the “post-pandemic era” and presented clean and warm new start.
-HOU Ruolan, graduate from the Law School
I really appreciate the careful arrangement made by our School for luggage packing. I would like to thank CHAI Rong and LI Xiang and other teachers and dorm keepers who made great efforts in this luggage packing work. During the luggage packing process, Mr. CHAI confirmed with me again and again that if there was any items missing through video calls. For many things that I forgot to pack, the teachers and keepers reminded me of them. They said that “if you forget about those things, you don’t have things to use when the term begins and you need to spend more money on it. So now we need to pack them up.” I was so touched that CHAI Rong specially helped me to remove the postcard brought back from the UK and helped me save it, which was out of my expectation. In this packing process, their patience, carefulness and kindness impressed me most. From making statistics in the early stage, fully respecting personal will of students to “one-to-one” and even “several-to-one” teacher responsibility system to the full participation of teachers during luggage packing, teachers from the Law School truly implemented the instruction of “personalized strategy” and created most heart-warming graduation memory for us.
-WU Rong, graduate from the Law School
In this special graduation season, graduates were concerned about luggage issue as they cannot return to school due to the pandemic. For me, I planned to pack by myself after the pandemic was in stable stage. However, due to work reason, I had no time to return to school and thus entrusted our School to help me pack and mail. Prior to packing, teachers from student affairs office had detailed communication with me on the selection of delivery. Mr. SHI, my junior student and a support person helped me pack my luggage. We had video call throughout the process. They were patient and asked about my opinions on disposal of items and helped me sort things out. Anyway, I find this video packing process a great experience.

Due to the pandemic, I cannot go back to the School to pack my things. After learning about my situation, the School specially arranged teachers to help me pack. During the packing process, teachers contacted me and actively responded to my appeals. They carefully and patiently sorted things out and properly placed my personal items. During this special period, their efforts impressed students. Here, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the School and teachers.
-LI Hao, graduate from the Law School
I really appreciate that the University and the School really care about the off-campus students. They arranged teachers to help us pack our luggage and solve our practical difficulties. During the packing process, teachers were careful and responsible, took into consideration the actual needs of students. During the special period of the pandemic, teachers and students of the whole university encountered great difficulties. I hoped that we can unit as one and tide over the crisis together.
-LI Mengyang, graduate from the Law School
Students and teachers posted their true feelings on their moments for this graduation move, which made this packing move for graduates really touching.
The intertwined words pandemic and graduation formed countless challenges. However, they can all be overcome by the concerted efforts of teachers and students. In the coming years, the School will always be the warm home of students no matter how far they go. The graduates will always be BNULAWER. In a fine-weather day, let’s gather in the Beijing Normal University, gather in the rear main building to chat about the friendship between teachers and students.
At last, I would like to appreciate the efforts of all teachers and students who participated in the packing work.
