From February 23 to 25, 2019, the 17th Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Chinese National Round was held at Yunnan University. 51 universities across the country participated in the competition. BNU won the first prize in the Chinese National Round and ranked 4th. BNU also qualified to represent China in the international competition held in Washington from March 31st to April 6th. This is BNU’s first time to advance to Washington since it participated in the trial for 3 years.

BNU’s Jessup team was formed in April 2018 and was coached by Associate Professor Liao Shiping. The team members are: Cheng Shuang (2015 Maxdo experimental class;, Oralist), Yang Chen (2016 Maxdo Experimental class; Oralist), Guo Yiwei (2016 Maxdo Experimental class, Oralist), Xiang Bowen (2015 Maxdo Experimental class, Researcher), Lan Tianxiang (2016 Outstanding Experimental Class, Researcher), Li Zhoujie (2017 Maxdo Experimental class, Researcher) and Liu Mingxin (2017 Maxdo Experimental class, Captain).

This year Jessup focused on the protection of migratory species, as well as the protection of the cultural and religious rights of indigenous peoples. Jessup Chinese National Round set the preliminary, quarter-final, semi-final and final stages. BNU team defeated the Southwest University of Political Science and Law, Shenzhen University and other colleges in the preliminary round, ranking eighth in the preliminary round with all four victories. In the quarter-finals, BNU won the China University of Political Science and Law, which ranked first in the preliminary round, entered the semi-finals and ranked 4th in the Chinese National Round. This is also the first time that the eighth team won the first team in the first preliminary in Chinese National Round’s 17-year history.



With the support of law school and Maxdo college’s leaders, teachers, alumni and former members, BNU Law School team achieve excellent results this year. During the preparation period, Professor Liao gave strong support and guidance to the team's legal search, writing and court defense skills. He is a strong backing for the members to prepare and participate in the competition. Outstanding alumni of the law school in the U.S., such as Zhang Miao, Guo Zixuan and Yue Huichuan, conducted simulation training and provided many valuable suggestions through the online video. Lan Chenggeng (2015 Outstanding Experimental Class), Liu Zhixi(2015 Maxdo Experimental Class), Luan Zheng (2015 Outstanding Experimental Class), Wang Yiheng (2015 Outstanding Experimental Class) and Hao Zelin (2015 Maxdo Experimental Class) and other former members provided strong support in the training and the simulation of the court.
BNU Law School and Maxdo College have always attached importance to, encouraged and supported students to participate in high-level international academic competitions. With the support of the law school and Maxdo College’s leaders, teachers and the hard work of team members, BNU has grown into a traditional strong team of the Jessup. With the in-depth implementation of the internationalization strategy of Law School and Maxdo College, BNU Law School and Maxdo College will cultivate more and more outstanding international legal talents through the investment and support of students participating in professional competitions.
In the future, Law School and Maxdo College will continue to support Jessup, Vis Moot, ICC and other international moot court competitions. Students from all levels of law school are welcome to join these competitions, enrich experience and enhance learning ability in the competition! We hope that the Jessup team members will carefully prepare for the upcoming international competition and show their talents in the international competition!
