On May 23, 2018, the first lecture of the Alibaba Intellectual Property Lecture Hall, hosted by the Alibaba Institute of Intellectual Property and co-organized by the Internet Policy and Law Research Center of Beijing Normal University, was successfully held at the Beijing Greenland Center in Alibaba. Professor Lu Jianping, Dean of the School of Law, Professor Xue Hong, Director of the Center for Internet Policy and Law, Professor Zhang Fuli, Foreign Secretary of the School of Law, and more than ten international students from seven different countries including Tanzania, Greece, Iran, Laos and Togo participated in the lecture, Hearing the wonderful speeches of Mr. Sun Jungong, Vice President of Alibaba Group, President of Alibaba Intellectual Property Institute, and Mr. Fan Junwei, Senior Legal Expert of Alibaba Group Legal Department, and conducted on-site interactive questions and answers.

The Ali Intellectual Property Institute was established on April 20 this year to study the issue of intellectual property protection in the process of e-commerce globalization, and is committed to form an environment which in line with the law of cross-border e-commerce development, maximize the protection of SMEs and young people from participating in cross-border e-commerce. Mr. Sun Jungong first introduced the background of the event and shared a speech entitled “the only thing unchanged is changing: building a new rule for cross-border e-commerce intellectual property protection”. He said: "Introducing Ali's work on intellectual property protection to international students from so many countries is particularly relevant to our important focus in the business development process, namely the globalization development strategy. We hope more young people and SMEs from different countries and regions can participate in the cross-border e-commerce development promoted by Ali and truly realize the universal value of e-commerce globalization."

Subsequently, Mr. Fan Junwei introduced the current work of Alibaba on intellectual property protection to the students present at the event, mainly including Notice and take-down Mechanism, Proactive Monitoring, IP Joint Force System, Law Enforcement Cooperation and Brand Collaboration etc.. Furthermore, Mr. Fan Junwei also shared many of Ali's cases on the protection of intellectual property rights, saying that Ali has been acting to protect intellectual property rights.

Following during the on-site exchanges, international students from Tanzania, Iran, Greece and other countries raised many valuable questions and discussed with Mr. Sun Jungong and Mr. Fan Junwei. Omar Mcha Hamza from Tanzania admits that during his tenure in the country, he has handled many complaints from local consumers about counterfeit and shoddy goods, this trip to Ali was very suitable for him, some cases and practical inspired a lot of ideas of himself. Before coming to Ali, Gran Mohammadreza from Iran did not understand how Chinese e-commerce companies protect intellectual property rights. Through the afternoon speech, he finally understood how much meaningful work China's e-commerce platform has done in this regard. Vasiliki Papagiannopoulou from Greece said she saw Ali's measures in intellectual property protection; but she also believed that many measures cannot rely solely on Ali's promotion, but require a multitude of stakeholders to work together.

Finally, Professor Lu Jianping, Dean of the School of Law, made a concluding speech. He first expressed his gratitude to the organizers of the event on behalf of the Law School of Beijing Normal University, and said that the establishment of the Alizhi Research Institute has enabled more people to understand the governance of Ali in the platform. In terms of efforts, I look forward to the future of Ali to achieve more results in this area, and also look forward to more opportunities for cooperation between Ali and Beijing Normal University Law School. This lecture was successfully concluded.
