In the summer vocation of 2019, William & Mary Law School is customizing the summer program “Introduce to Global Legal Practice with an emphasis on U.S. Law” for students in the Law School of Beijing Normal University. In addition to professional learning in the classroom and moot court skills training, students also have the opportunity to experience American culture through various activities and feel the charm of the Anglo-American legal system.
I. Program time
From July 15, 2019 to July 27, 2019 (a two-week program team) or
From July 15, 2019 to August 3, 2019 (a three-week program team)
II. Program location and university profiles
College of William & Mary (WM for short), founded in 1693, is the second oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. It is one of the public Ivy League Universities, only younger than Harvard University founded in 1636.
College of William & Mary has many firsts in the history of higher education in the United States: the first college in the history of the United States; the first university in the United States to have a full faculty and staff; the first university in the United States to have an elective system; the first school upgrading from college to university in the United States; the first university in the United States to set up modern linguistics, contemporary history and law school. In 2014, the undergraduate education of College of William & Mary was ranked as the second by U.S News & World Report. It ranked the 34th in 2016. It was ranked as the 32nd by U.S News & World Report in 2017.
The alumni of College of William & Mary include three American presidents: Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and John Tyler.
III. Course arrangement
Week 1: Legal English and Writing in morning (3 hours); Introduction to U.S. Law (1.25 hours) plus Lawyering and Professional Skills Training (1.25 hours) in the afternoon
Week 2: Legal English and Writing in morning (3 hours); Introduction to U.S. Law (1.25 hours) plus Lawyering and Professional Skills Training (1.25 hours) in the afternoon
Week 3: Legal English and Writing in morning (3 hours); Introduction to U.S. Litigation, Mock Trial Training and Court visit (2.5 hours) in the afternoon
Weekend cultural and historical learning experiences to:
Jamestown, Yorktown, and historic Virginia
Virginia Beach, Atlantic Ocean
Washington D.C.
V. Program cost
$2,000 for two weeks, $3,500 for three weeks, includes housing (air-conditioned with cooking facilities), Richmond airport group transportation, and costs of cultural and historical learning experiences.
*Students will be responsible for visa and international airfare, health insurance, and all meals. (A team includes at least 15 people)
VI. Condition of registration
1. Students of the Law School.
2. Good command of English, able to communicate fluently.
VII. Deadline and method of registration
1. The deadline of registration is 10 p.m. on March 31, 2019.
2. Students who are willing to sign up should download and fill in the attachment “notice of the summer program of William and Mary Law School in 2019” (in the application form, please indicate whether you choose the two-week program or three-week program) and send it to lilyzhang0808@163.com. For the subjects of the email and attachment, please indicate “registration of the summer program of William & Mary Law School +the name of the applicant”.
Remark: The program is organized by the college, and the college will subsidize part of the international travelling expense according to the registration situation.
