From January 21 to February 3, 2018, 12 undergraduates and graduate students and Dr. Dejia LI from Beijing Normal University School of Law flew to Hong Kong and started a two-week internship with outstanding lawyers and barristers in various fields.
On the night of arrival, a welcome dinner for the students was hosted by Dr. CHIU Man Chung Andy of Hong Kong Shue Yan University. Mr. Chunhua LIU, Deputy Director of the Law Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government, attended the dinner and cordially greeted all the students and expressed his ardentexpectations and cordial teachings for the students' two-week internship.
On the morning of January 22, part of the students headed for law firms and chambers to start their internship, while other students went for a trial in the High Court of Hong Kong. After the trial, Dr. CHIU invited the students for a lunch with His Honour Judge CHAN (陈振国法官), who warmly greeted the students. Later on, students followed Judge CHAN to visit the Wanchai District Court. He introduced the operation of Hong Kong Family Court to the students in detail. In the end, several students raised their own questions to Judge CHAN, which also impressed him a lot. After the visit, all students arrived at different law firms and chambers and began their internship.
During the two weeks, students took part personally in the operation of Hong Kong's legal system, which gave them the opportunity to truly understand the superiority and inadequacy of judicial operation under the common law system of Hong Kong and to gain a deeper understanding of law. Students have also encountered many difficulties in the process of internship, but with the guidance and help of their masters, they graduallyovercame the difficulties and made great progress.
The high-intensity but colorful internship soon came to an end. On the morning of February 3, Dr. CHIU Man Chung Andy invited all students and Dr. Li for a farewell breakfast. During the farewell meal, students summarized their insights and gains in the past two weeks and expressed their gratitude to Dr. CHIU, who was responsible for the internship.
After breakfast, teacher and students of Beijing Normal University set out for Beijing. This experience helped to broaden students’ horizons and deepen students' understanding of the common law system in Hong Kong. It also lays a solid foundation for students to apply the knowledge to their own forms and contribute to the socialist legal system in the future. Students also forged a deep friendship with their masters and students of Shue Yan University. This was truly a fruitful journey.
