On October 10, 2012, Mr. Jeff Dodd, senior lawyer of Andrew Law Firm of the United States, Bob Gutkin, a well-known intellectual property litigation lawyer in the United States, and Dr. Wang Ping, a partner of the American Andrews Law Firm, were invited to the Law School of Beijing Normal University. Attorney Jeff Dodd gave a lecture on the subject of "Patent Pools, Standards and the Theory and Practice of Licensing" to the law school teachers and students in the 1922 mock court. Lawyers Bob Gutkin and Wang Ping attended the lecture and made a wonderful review. The lecture was presided over by Associate Professor Zhang Hong, deputy dean of the School of Law. More than 40 students from the law school listened to the lecture.
Professor Jeff Dodd gave an in-depth explanation on patent sharing, cross-licensing, patent exclusivity and patent licensing. He believes that patent authorization must consider three factors: property, contract, and public policy. Regarding patent sharing, Professor Jeff Dodd believes that sharing patents can play a role in facilitating human production, life, and social development. Patent sharing accelerates product development and avoids more cross-technology patent litigation. Patent owners must invest heavily in research and development. Therefore, the issue of patent sharing and the scope of sharing need to be strictly defined. Finally, Mr. Jeff Dodd elaborated on the implementation of patent protection in the United States.
In the final discussion session, the students enthusiastically asked questions. Mr. Jeff Dodd actively answered questions from the students and the atmosphere was lively.
