BNU Law School is one of the youngest and most dynamic faculties in Beijing Normal University, a well-renowned university with a hundred-year tradition in China. Its precursor was the law major established by the Department of Philosophy in 1995, the Department of Law established in 2002, and the Criminal Law Science Research Institute established in 2005. It culminates in the formal establishment of BNU Law School in 2006. Our current Dean is Professor LU Jianping, the executive Vice Chairman of the China Branch of the International Association of Criminal Law, the Vice Chairman of the China Criminal Law Research Association, and the Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society of Criminology.
Although BNU Law School was established in recent time, it has made outstanding achievements in various fields. BNU Law School was ranked 8th in mainland China and 21st in Asian in the ranking of the world’s leading QS university rankings in 2017. At the same time, BNU Law School is a member of the first batch of China’s excellent education training bases for legal talents.
BNU Law School continues to attach importance to building a competitive faculty. At present, our faculty is equipped with a list of capable and creative teachers and scholars. As of April 2018, among our full-time professors, there are 1 “Cheung Kong Scholar Chair Professor” and 3 “Outstanding Youth Jurists”. Currently, there are 40 professors, 36 associate professors and 10 assistant professors. The proportion of teachers who have obtained a doctoral degree abroad exceeds 20%.
BNU Law School is a doctoral degree-granting unit (first-level discipline) with complete major categories. It has formed a three-level talent training pattern providing comprehensive training programs for undergraduates, postgraduates (including master’s and doctor’s students), and other legal trainees at various levels. Now there are 7 teaching and research centers, 15 research centers and 4 criminal law exchange centers.
BNU Law School puts a premium on international student exchanges. For instance, it signed cooperation agreements with more than 40 universities and institutions in the United States, Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Canada. Among them, BNU Law School runs exchange students and summer programs with more than 10 European and American universities, such as Oxford University, Aberdeen University, Emory University, and Toulouse University of France. Furthermore, BNU Law School has a master’s program in Chinese Law, and launched the International E-Commerce Law Joint Certification Program with the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law. By recruiting and training foreign students, BNU Law School makes efforts to create a diverse cultural environment for faculty members and students alike.
In the phase of leap-frog development, BNU Law School relies on Beijing Normal University, a well-known university at home and abroad. We adhere to the school motto “morality can cultivate talents, law can master the world
”and will stick to our development characteristics, that is, high starting point, research-based orientation. and internationalization. Most importantly, BNU Law School will focus on cultivating first-class talents in legal practice and high-end legal talents in legal research, and commit itself to becoming a nationally honored and internationally recognized law teaching and research institution.
