From February 23 to February 25, 2019, the 17th Chinese National Round for Philip C. Jessup (Jessup) International Law Moot Court was held in Yunnan University, and 51 colleges in China participated in the round. Beijing Normal University team won the first prize in Chinese National Round, ranked the fourth place and was qualified for the international game held in Washington from March 31 to April 6 on behalf of China. This is the first time for Beijing Normal University to be qualified from Chinese National Round in 3 years.
Beijing Normal University team was established in April 2018, and Associate Professor LIAO Shiping from Law School assumes the coach. The team members include CHENG Shuang (Maxdo Law Experimental Class of 2015, player), YANG Chen (Maxdo Law Experimental Class of 2016, player), GUO Yiwei (Maxdo Law Experimental Class of 2016, player), XIANG Bowen (Maxdo Law Experimental Class of 2015, researcher), LAN Tianxiang (Excellent Law Experimental Class of 2016, researcher), LI Zhouje (Maxdo Law Experimental Class of 2017, researcher) and LIU Mingxin (Maxdo Law Experimental Class of 2017, leader).
The Jessup Moot Court focuses on the topics as protection of migratory species, protection of culture, religion right of aboriginal inhabitants. Preliminary, quarter final, semi-final and final are set for Chinese National Round. Beijing Normal University team defeated teams from Southwest University of Political Science and Law, Shenzhen University, etc. in the preliminary, ranked the eighth place in the preliminary with four wins, and entered the final eight. In the following quarter final, Beijing Normal University team defeated China University of Political Science and Law that ranked the first place in the preliminary, entered semi-final, and finally ranged the fourth place in Chinese National Round. This is the first time that a team that ranked the eighth place in the preliminary defeated the team that ranked the first place in the 17 years of history of Chinese National Round.
The excellent result of Beijing Normal University team cannot be achieved without the support from leaders, teachers, schoolfellow and senior team members of Law School and Maxdo School. During the preparation, Teacher LIAO provided great support and guide on legal retrieval, writing and court debate skill, etc., as the strong support of team members to prepare and participate in the competition. Excellent schoolfellow of Law School as ZHANG Miao, GUO Zixuan, YUE Huichuan, etc. in U.S. conducted simulation training on the team members through online video and provided precious suggestions. Senior team members of last Jessup including LAN Chenggeng (Excellent Law Experimental Class of 2015), LIU Zhixi (Maxdo Law Experimental Class of 2015), LUAN Zheng (Excellent Law Experimental Class of 2015), WANG Yiheng (Excellent Law Experimental Class of 2015) and HAO Zelin (Maxdo Law Experimental Class of 2015) provided great support on early training, simulation debate, etc.
Law School and Maxdo College of Beijing Normal University has attached importance to, encouraged and supported students to participate in high-level international academic competition. Under the great support from leaders, teachers of Law School and Maxdo College and efforts of team members, Beijing Normal University Law School team has become a traditional power for “Jessup”. With the implementation of international strategy of Law School and Maxdo College, through input and support for the professional competition, Law School and Maxdo College of Beijing Normal University will cultivate more and more excellent international law talents.
In the future, Law School and Maxdo College will continue to support international moot court competitions as Jessup, VisMoot, ICC, etc. Students of Law School are welcomed to register for such competition, enrich experience and improve learning ability in the competition!
